Billy Eppler gray suit sunglasses on with Angels on field in 2019

The Mets have interest in former Yankees executive and Angels general manager Billy Eppler for their head of baseball operations vacancy, according to three league sources.

Eppler has not yet interviewed, so the level of interest on either side is yet to be determined. He joins Boston Red Sox executive vice president and assistant general manager Raquel Ferreira, who is interviewing this week, and Baltimore Orioles assistant GM Sig Mejdal as the known current candidates.

The Mets have requested permission to speak to Mejdal but have not yet received an answer.

There might be one or two others on the Mets’ radar, but that is most of the field as of now.

Eppler, 46, was an assistant general manager for the Yankees before becoming Angels GM in 2015. That is widely known as one of the most challenging situations in the sport, in no small measure because of owner Arte Moreno. The Angels fired Eppler in 2020; he recently took a high-level job at the WME agency.

The Mets considered Eppler for a baseball operations position last year as well.
