Legendary Boston sports figure Jerry Remy passed away on Saturday night at the age of 68 after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.

Remy played for the Red Sox and also covered the team as a broadcaster for NESN. He stepped away from the broadcasting booth on Aug. 4 to undergo treatment for the cancer and said, “as I’ve done before and will continue to do so, I will battle this with everything I have.”

Following the New England Patriots’ victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, Bill Belichick gave a tribute to Remy.

“Before we sign off, I just want to say to all our fans out there, who are mostly Red Sox fans, how much we’re all saddened by Jerry’s [Remy] passing and how much he meant to all of us,” Belichick said on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show. “The connection that he was to the Red Sox and his voice in the game and [how much he meant] to the fans. He meant so much to Boston sports as a player, as an announcer — his commentary on the game and insight into the game. We’ll all miss him. I know our fans are Jerry Remy and Red Sox fans, too.

“Our sympathy goes out to the Remy family and I just wanted to express my, and all of our appreciation for all that he did to make Boston sports enjoyable and exciting for all of us. We’ll certainly miss him.”
