Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler finalists for baseball’s biggest awards originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Phillies have a pair of finalists for two of the most prestigious awards in baseball.

Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler were both named among the top 3 finishers in the National League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young voting when the Baseball Writers Association of America revealed its finalists on Monday night.

Winners of the Cy Young awards, in both leagues, will be announced on November 17. The MVP award, in both leagues, will be announced on November 18.

Wheeler is joined by Max Scherzer of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Corbin Burnes of the Milwaukee Brewers as the three finalists for the NL Cy Young award.

Scherzer has already won the award three times, once in the American League and twice in the NL.

In his second season with the Phillies, Wheeler went 14-10 with a 2.78 ERA in 32 starts in 2021. He led the majors with 213 1/3 innings pitched and the NL with 247 strikeouts.

Harper is a finalist for the NL MVP along with Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals and Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres.

Harper had a brilliant season in 2021, his third with the Phillies. He hit .309 with a .429 on-base percentage and a .615 slugging percentage. He and Guerrero were the only two players in the majors to reach .300/.400/.600 in all three of those categories. Harper led the majors with a 1.044 OPS. He led the NL with 78 extra-base hits and hit 35 home runs with 84 RBIs.

In addition, Harper became just the fourth player in history to reach at least 100 runs, 100 walks, 40 doubles and 35 homers in a single season, joining all-time greats Babe Ruth, Stan Musial and Barry Bonds.

Already, Harper has won a Players Choice Award, voted on by his peers, as the NL’s Outstanding Player for 2021.
