Posey says 2021 Giants his ‘No. 1’ regular season team originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Buster Posey has been part of some legendary Giants teams, including three squads that wound up capturing World Series titles. As the star catcher and his teammates celebrated being the first MLB team in 2021 to clinch a playoff spot on Monday night, Posey deemed this year’s group as the best regular-season team he has competed on.
“As far as regular-season teams go for me, this is No. 1,” Posey said after the Giants’ 9-1 win over the San Diego Padres. “The way we’ve played this year from start to finish is nothing like I’ve been apart of.”
Purely going off the numbers, Posey isn’t wrong. Sept. 13 marks the earliest in a season that the franchise ever has clinched a playoff berth, and the Giants’ 94th win on Monday night matches the most regular-season wins the Giants have had during Posey’s tenure. And that mark comes with 18 games to go in the regular season.
Posey is a veteran and clearly was mindful about specifying “regular-season team” during his comments. He has won three titles, and knows a season can’t be considered an absolute success without a World Series ring.
The Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t going away just yet and could challenge for the division crown down the stretch, but from the start up to this point, there hasn’t been a better Giants team in a long time.
Posey’s resurgence after a year off in 2020 has been a major factor in that, but the former MVP also knows, in the words of the late, great Kobe Bryant: “Job’s not finished.”
