Bote expected to miss start of 2022, other injury updates originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Cubs infielder David Bote is expected to miss the start of the 2022 season after recently undergoing surgery on his left shoulder.

Bote dislocated his shoulder sliding into second base in late May. He went on the injured list for two months, returning at the end of July. He played 97 games for the season, hitting .199/.276/.330 with eight home runs.

Bote has an estimated six-month recovery.

In other Cubs injury updates, top pitching prospect Brailyn Marquez is finishing a throwing program in Arizona and is expected to be ready for spring training.

He missed the entire 2021 season due to a shoulder strain and later a setback with the shoulder as he began ramping back up. He was delayed in spring training prior to that after testing positive for COVID-19.

Márquez last pitched in a game in the Cubs’ 2020 regular season finale, his big-league debut.

Jason Heyward, who missed the final few weeks of 2021 with a concussion, is symptom-free. A normal offseason is expected for the veteran outfielder.

Reliever Brad Wieck is cleared for all baseball activities and expected to be ready for spring training after undergoing a heart procedure in August. He’s currently working out in Arizona.

First baseman Alfonso Rivas is rehabbing from a right middle finger tendon injury. He has not had surgery and is expected to have a normal offseason following the completion of his rehab in early December.

Lefty pitching prospect Brendon Little has a stress fracture in his elbow and has been shut down. He’ll be reevaluated in six weeks.

Little, the Cubs’ 2017 first-round pick, was pitching in the Arizona Fall League.
