Steele relishes Ohtani matchup: ‘Modern day Babe Ruth’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

A unique aspect of Cactus League play is seeing matchups that are rare during the regular season or that only happen during interleague play.

Take Thursday’s Cubs-Angels game in Arizona, when lefty Justin Steele faced two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Steele relished the opportunity to match up against Ohtani, or as he put it, “modern day Babe Ruth.”

“It’s really cool to face somebody like him with his stature,” Steele told reporters in Arizona, including’s Jordan Bastian. “I was really looking forward to that, like last night I was thinking about that.”

Ohtani, who was in the Angels’ lineup as the designated hitter, drew a walk off Steele in the first inning.

Steele, who’s in the mix this spring to win a spot in the Cubs’ rotation, threw two scoreless innings, walking two with two strikeouts while allowing no hits.

The Cubs don’t face the Angels during the 2022 regular season, but perhaps we’ll get another Steele-Ohtani matchup down the line.
