More COVID-19 news: Cubs put Martini on injured list originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

A third Cubs player went on the injured list Friday without an injury designation in outfielder Nick Martini, which means a COVID-19 move.

The club also put infielder Patrick Wisdom (Wednesday) and catcher Austin Romine (Thursday) on the injured list, without specifying a reason, this week.

Additionally, the Cubs placed Nico Hoerner (oblique tightness) on the 10-day IL Friday while recalling pitcher Cory Abbott and outfielder Johneshwy Fargas from Triple-A Iowa.

Abbott will start Friday’s series opener against the Cardinals in place of Zach Davies, whom the Cubs shut down this week.

The Hoerner move officially ends his season, although the Cubs said this week he would not play the remaining handful of games due to lingering soreness from previous injuries sustained in 2021.

He went on the IL on three previous occasions due to a left forearm strain, left hamstring strain and right oblique strain.
