Cubs pick up Wade Miley’s 2022 option originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

As anticipated, the Cubs picked up starter Wade Miley‘s $10 million club option for 2022, the team announced Sunday.

The Cubs claimed Miley off waivers from the Reds on Friday. Sunday was the deadline for teams to exercise options.

Starting pitching is No. 1 on Cubs president Jed Hoyer’s list of offseason priorities and Miley is a veteran with a good track record.

The lefty was the Reds’ top starter in 2021, going 12-7 with a 3.37 ERA in 28 starts. He tossed 163 innings, going six or more innings 16 times.

Miley, who threw a no-hitter in May, led all Reds players in bWAR (6.0).

He spent 2019 with the Astros, turning in a 3.98 ERA in 33 starts — tied for a career high. In 2018 with the Brewers, he sported a 2.57 ERA in 16 starts.

Cincinnati signed Miley to a two-year deal with an option ahead of the 2020 season. The Reds tried to trade him in recent weeks but “didn’t have a buyer,” general manager Nick Krall told reporters Friday.

By waiving him, the Reds saved $1 million — the cost of a buyout included with the option.

The Cubs will be in the market for starting pitching this winter. Miley joins Kyle Hendricks in the rotation, and Alec Mills, Adbert Alzolay, Justin Steele and Keegan Thompson are other in-house options.
