Cubs trade Sergio Alcántara to Diamondbacks originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

As the Cubs manipulate their roster leading up to Opening Day, they made a trade Sunday, sending infielder Sergio Alcántara to the Diamondbacks for cash.

Alcántara was on the outside looking in this spring in the Opening Day roster picture. The Cubs designated the 25-year-old infielder for assignment on Wednesday to make room on the 40-man roster for new reliever Mychal Givens.

Alcántara played in 89 games for the Cubs last season, finishing with a .205/.303/.327 slash line while appearing at shortstop, second and third base.

The Diamondbacks signed him out of the Dominican Republic in 2012, trading him to the Tigers in 2017 in the deal for J.D. Martinez.

It’s the second trade the Cubs made this weekend after sending outfielder Harold Ramirez to the Rays on Friday.

In other roster news, the Marlins claimed right-handed reliever Tommy Nance off waivers from the Cubs Sunday. Nance, who posted a 7.22 ERA in 27 games last season, was DFA’d on Friday.
