DOCTOR, DOCTOR: Explaining when Tigers’ Eduardo Rodriguez, Riley Greene could return from injuries

SHAWN WINDSOR: Tigers’ win after a pair of injury losses a true indication of team’s character

Game notes: The Tigers are ailing, with ace Eduardo Rodriguez and slugger Riley Greene on the IL for the time being, but they’ll get a glimpse of the future today when Reese Olson makes his big-league debut in E-Rod’s rotation spot against the White Sox in Chicago at 8:10 p.m. on Bally Sports Detroit. Olson, who joined the organization in a 2021 trade deadline deal with the Brewers*, has a 6.38 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 22 walks over 36⅔ innings this season, but he has been pitching much better as of late. Over his past three starts, Olson has struck out 22 while walking six and allowing two runs over 14⅓ innings, for a 1.26 ERA.

*Olson is the latest link in a transaction chain that goes all the way back to Curtis Granderson’s drafting in 2002. The chain: Olson came from the Brewers in exchange for a package that included left-hander Daniel Norris, who joined the Tigers as part of the return for left-hander David Price in 2015. Price came to the Tigers in a 2014 deal that included outfielder Austin Jackson, who arrived in Detroit in a 2009 deal that sent Granderson to the New York Yankees. Granderson, of course, was the Tigers’ third-round pick out of UIC in 2002. Whew.

The White Sox are likely to go with an opener, as they did last weekend in this rotation spot: right-hander Jesse Scholtens got the nod on May 27 and limited the Tigers to two runs on four hits and two walks over 4⅔ innings. That went for naught, as reliever Joe Kelly melted down to give the Tigers a 7-3 win, one of three in their four-game series at Comerica Park.

After tonight’s game, the Tigers and ChiSox finish things up with a pair of matinees Saturday and Sunday, both starting at 2:10 p.m. The Tigers wont have much down time, though; they’ll head right to Philly for a three-game set with the Phillies beginning Monday night. The White Sox, meanwhile, get Monday off before hoofing it to the Big Apple to take on the Yankees on Tuesday-Thursday.
