When: 1:10 p.m.
Where: Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
TV: Bally Sports Detroit.
Radio: WXYT-FM (97.1; other radio affiliates).
First-pitch weather forecast: 74 degrees.
Probable starting pitchers: Tigers RHP Casey Mize (7-7, 3.59 ERA) vs. Reds RHP Luis Castillo (7-14, 4.30 ERA).
Tigers lineup: TBA.
Game notes: Mize took the loss Monday vs. the Minnesota Twins, giving up three earned runs over six innings. He finished August on a relatively strong note, allowing three earned runs in 11 innings vs. the Twins and St. Louis Cardinals. Those starts helped lift an ugly August; even with the solid finish, Mize still pitched to a 4.44 ERA with 17 strikes and 24 hits in 24 1/3 innings (five starts). Cincinnati, in the midst of a run toward a National League wild card spot, counters with Castillo. The lanky right-hander is having a down year — his 4.30 ERA is tied for a career high and nearly a full run worse than it was in 2020 (3.21) and 2019 (3.40) — but has still eaten 157 innings, striking out 159. And his FIP (3.90) and ERA+ (109) show he’s capable of a shutdown outing.
After this series, the Tigers travel to meet the Pirates and the Reds travel to face the Cubs. The Pirates (one of four MLB teams with fewer than 50 wins in SEPTEMBER) have been so bad they were just swept by the Iowa, ahem, Chicago Cubs, who essentially gave up on the 2021 season. Another Tigers rookie, Tarik Skubal, will start the first game vs. the Pirates.
