TORK BOMBS ARE COMING: We might be seeing the beginning of Spencer Torkelson’s breakthrough
Game notes: Reese Olson looked great in the first two starts of his career against the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, but struggled mightily in his most recent outing against the Atlanta Braves.
Reese Olson (no relation to Matt) allowed seven runs on five hits against the Braves, including an absolute bomb of a home run by Acuña to deep center field. Olson’s ERA jumped from 2.70 to 6.08 after the tough day. He will certainly be trying to find the form he had in his first two games, as he only allowed three runs combined in those outings.
Meanwhile, the Tigers will be facing a pitcher looking for his first win in 14 starts this year. Jordan Lyles has a dreadful 0-11 record in 2023. Certainly, some of that can be chalked up to pitching for the Royals, who are in last place in the AL Central. But it’s definitely fair to say Lyles has struggled as well.
Lyles has allowed five runs in each of his last two outings. One thing Lyles has shown is an ability to fill innings, as he has pitched at least five innings in all but two of his starts this year.
After having two bullpen starts over the weekend (Friday and Sunday) the Tigers will certainly be looking for Olson to follow in Lyles’ footsteps and fill some much-needed innings.
