Game notes: The Tigers and Blue Jays open a three-game set at Comerica following a brief road trip for Detroit. After a series win in Toronto and a two-game split in St. Louis, Matt Manning takes the mound Friday for the Tigers. He’s 1-1 this month with a 6.75 ERA over 14⅔ innings (three starts). These three games are the last between the Blue Jays and Tigers in 2021. Last weekend in Toronto, the Tigers won two of three, ending with a rousing Sunday comeback — featuring Miguel Cabrera’s 500th home run — to seal the series win. The Blue Jays have the American League’s fourth-best run differential (behind the three division leaders) but are in danger of missing the playoffs, trailing Boston, Oakland and Seattle in the wild-card race as of Thursday afternoon. The surging New York Yankees, thanks to an 11-game win streak, enjoy a three-game lead over the Boston Red Sox.
