Game notes: The Tigers earned a rare victory Saturday, beating the Angels, 4-3, thanks to a clutch RBI from Victor Reyes. If the Tigers can pull out the series win, it’ll be their first of August.
Speaking of firsts, Rodgriguez is making his first start in over three months. The left-hander struggled May 18 vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, getting one out and allowing two walks, four hits and three runs before departing with a rib cage injury. He left that game, and then the team, before returning for a rehab assignment earlier this month.
Ohtani, who has 27 home runs and 72 RBIs this year, saw the Tigers twice last season. The reigning AL MVP was great at home in June getting a win, but was even better at Comerica Park. The Tigers didn’t walk once and managed just six hits (one home run) over eight innings as Ohtani struck out 10 and induced 10 ground balls.
The Tigers get Monday off before facing the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday and Wednesday; the Angels head immediately to Tampa Bay for a four-game series with the Rays.
