Former Giants manager Bochy reacts to first win with Rangers originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Bruce Bochy’s tenure as the Texas Rangers’ new manager is off to a good start.

Speaking with MLB Network after the Rangers’ 11-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, the former Giants manager explained how he feels being back on the field as a manager for the first time since retiring after the 2019 season.

“You know what, just a fun game to be part of, your first game back,” Bochy explained to Greg Amsinger. “I mean, I get tested with the heart rate here. I mean, it’s just a fun game, sold out.

“You get down 5-0, it wasn’t quite the game we all expected with the two guys going but that’s why you play the game and just a great comeback by the boys.”

The 67-year-old also explained to the group that earning his first win as the manager of the Rangers gave him a deeper appreciation of being back in the dugout, around his coaches and players.

“The last three years, just watching Opening Day, I miss it,” Bochy continued. “This is one of the most exciting days you can have and being part of this, it does just make you that much more grateful to be a part of it.

“I missed the game and have the first game go like this, you realize how much you miss it.”

After leading the Giants to three World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014, Bochy retired in from managing after the 2019 campaign and served in a front-office role with San Francisco. In October 2022, Bochy was hired by the Rangers to help turn the franchise around.

Although San Francisco’s beloved former manager is now in the AL West, Giants fans have to be happy to see Bochy back in the dugout doing what he loves.

And even if he will be opposing dugout, fans undoubtedly will give Bochy the recognition he deserves when the Rangers visit Oracle Park for a three-game series on Aug. 11 to Aug. 13.
