Zaidi meets with reps for Belt, DeSclafani at GM meetings originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Last offseason, the Giants extended Kevin Gausman the one-year qualifying offer, which was worth $18.9 million at the time. He accepted, had the best season of his career, was an All-Star for San Francisco and now is due for a big payday as a free agent.

This offseason, the Giants handed the qualifying offer, worth $18.4 million this year, only to Brandon Belt. Pitchers Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani were eligible but did not receive the offer, making them both free agents. On Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s John Shea, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi met with representatives of Belt and DeSclafani at the MLB GM meetings.

Shea also reported the Giants are interested in a multi-year deal for Belt.

Outside noise is that he will accept the qualifying offer. Zaidi said, “it’s hard to say.” Belt has until Nov. 17 to either accept the offer or head to the open market. If he signs with another team, the Giants will receive a compensatory pick after the Competitive Balance Round B in next year’s draft.

Belt, 33, hit a career-high 29 home runs and had a .597 slugging percentage last season. But Belt’s season also only lasted 97 games. He didn’t play again after fracturing his thumb on Sept. 26 and missed the entire NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

DeSclafani, 31, went 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA. He started Game 4 of the NLDS and allowed two earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings. He struggled all season against the Dodgers and would have had a 2.37 ERA if it weren’t for those six starts against the Giants’ rivals.

“We’re going to focus on pitchers who we think have a genuine interest in coming to San Francisco and being part of our team,” Zaidi said. “And we’re getting really good feedback on that. We have multiple rotation spots to fill, so we’re not going to be afraid to strike early.”
