Giants fall out of first in West for first time since May 30 originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The Giants’ three-month reign atop the National League West is over.

For the first time since May 30, the Giants no longer lead the division after they lost to the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-2, at Oracle Park on Wednesday night, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Atlanta Braves, 4-3, at home.

The Dodgers now hold a half-game lead in the division. The Giants and Brewers wrap up their four-game series Thursday, while Los Angeles has the day off. San Francisco will be looking to avoid a disastrous four-game sweep at the hands of Milwaukee.

On Friday, the Giants and Dodgers begin a massive three-game series that could go a long way to deciding the winner of the division.

The last time the Giants were out of first place in the West, the San Diego Padres actually led the division. Since then, the Padres have cratered, and now are 14 games behind the Dodgers and 13 1/2 behind the Giants.

The Giants have had a stranglehold on the West for three months, and the Dodgers have been out of the top spot for even longer. The last time LA held an outright division lead was April 25. The last time they held at least a share of the lead was April 28.

The Giants still have a month to right the ship and take down the Dodgers in the West, but with the injuries to the pitching staff piling up, it’s going to be an uphill battle the rest of the way.
