Through 3 Quarters

The Philadelphia 76ers are flexing their muscles against the Boston Celtics, showing why they were favored to win all along. After three quarters it’s looking more and more like the 76ers’ high-powered offense is just too much for Boston as Philadelphia lead 83-66.

Philadelphia has been led by center Joel Embiid, who so far has dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds in addition to four dimes. Boston has been relying on the performance of center Robert Williams III, who has posted a double-double on 14 boards and 12 points.

Boston has been used to carrying a lead into the fourth quarter lately, so we’ll see how they respond to the deficit.

What to Know

The Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics will face off in an Atlantic Division clash at 7 p.m. ET Jan. 14 at Wells Fargo Center. Philadelphia is out to stop a five-game streak of losses at home.

The 76ers ended up a good deal behind the Charlotte Hornets when they played on Wednesday, losing 109-98. The losing side was boosted by center Joel Embiid, who had 31 points along with six rebounds. The matchup made it Embiid’s eighth in a row with at least 31 points.

Meanwhile, Boston had enough points to win and then some against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, taking their game 119-100. The Celtics’ small forward Jayson Tatum did his thing and had 33 points in addition to seven boards.

Philadelphia is the favorite in this one, with an expected 3.5-point margin of victory. Those playing the odds have seen things go back and forth with Philadelphia, who are 19-20-1 against the spread.

Philadelphia is now 23-17 while Boston sits at 21-21. A couple stats to keep an eye on: The 76ers enter the contest with 5.83 blocked shots per game on average, good for fourth best in the league. But the Celtics are even better: they come into the game boasting the second most blocked shots per game in the league at 5.95. Points in the paint might be hard to come by.
