Phillies’ ties to Yankees run deeper by the day originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Phillies’ ties to the New York Yankees run deeper by the day. From the field to the dugout to the front office, the Phils are stocked with folks formerly of the Bronx, with new hitting coach Kevin Long the latest.

Long was the Yankees’ hitting coach from 2007 to 2014, spending seven of those seasons under manager Joe Girardi. They’ll be reunited in Philadelphia.

Bench coach Rob Thomson was also a member of Girardi’s Yankees staff from 2008-17.

Pitching coach Caleb Cotham made 12 appearances for the Yankees in 2015.

Brian Barber, the Phillies’ director of amateur scouting, spent 18 seasons with the Yankees.

Didi Gregorius and Ronald Torreyes, of course, are also ex-Yankees. Ian Kennedy, who spent two months with the Phillies after the 2021 trade deadline, began his career in the Bronx.

The ties to the Yankees were one of the topics on Tuesday’s Phillies Talk podcast. Jim Salisbury and I also discussed:

• Bryce Harper’s role in the hiring of Long, who was with the Nationals the last four seasons.

• Phillies could be making another coaching hire soon.

• Nick Pivetta’s big series for the Red Sox.

• Braves pitcher Ian Anderson, selected two picks after Mickey Moniak in 2016, continues to shine in the postseason.

• When might Zach Eflin be ready in 2022? Do the Phillies need to sign a starting pitcher for $10 million or more to avoid another Matt Moore-Chase Anderson situation?
