Hernandez, Santana return for Red Sox originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The turnstile on and off of the COVID-19 injured list continues to swing for the Boston Red Sox, who got two players back Tuesday but learned that a player already on the reserve had tested positive.

Manager Alex Cora said that Danny Santana and Kiké Hernandez would be active for Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, but that pitcher Nick Pivetta, already on the COVID-19 IL, had tested positive for the virus in a breakthrough case.

To make room for Santana and Hernandez, the team designated Taylor Motter for assignment and optioned Franchy Cordero to Triple-A Worcester.

Tomase: Kike Hernandez’s Red Sox return can’t come soon enough

The return of Hernandez in particular is a boon for Boston, which has struggled without him defensively in center field. Cora said that Hernandez would be playing “a lot” of center field for the Red Sox and is indeed in the lineup there for Tuesday’s game, batting leadoff.

The 30-year-old Hernandez is batting .258 with 17 homers and 51 runs batted in during his first year in Boston to go along with an .811 OPS over 419 at-bats.
