What you need to know about the Lakers

This past Saturday, the Lakers lost to the Portland Trail Blazers on the road by a decisive 105-90 margin. Los Angeles was down 93-62 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. One thing holding Los Angeles back was the mediocre play of point guard Russell Westbrook, who did not have his best game. Westbrook finished with only eight points on 1-for-13 shooting and turned the ball over six times in his 29 minutes on the court.

The Lakers will once again be short-handed against the Hornets with LeBron James (abdomen), Trevor Ariza (ankle), Kendrick Nunn (ankle), and Talen Horton-Tucker (thumb) all out, and Anthony Davis (finger) questionable. Los Angeles has yet to really gel as a team and have been uncharacteristically below average defensively thus far. On the bright side, the Lakers should benefit from facing a Charlotte team that is giving up a league-worst 117.6 points per game in 2021-22.

What you need to know about the Hornets

Meanwhile, Charlotte has dropped four consecutive games, with three of its losses coming in blowout fashion. The Hornets’ most recent loss came against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday by a score of 120-106. The top scorers for the Hornets were small forward Miles Bridges (21 points) and point guard LaMelo Ball (21 points).

The Hornets may be able to capitalize on the Lakers injury situation. While Los Angeles will be missing several players, Charlotte is relatively healthy with only one player, P.J. Washington (day-to-day), listed on its injury report. While the Hornets are statistically the worst defense in the NBA, they also have one of the league’s better offensive attacks, as evident by their 113.5 points per game average, which ranks No. 2 in the NBA.
