Barnes replacing Richards on Red Sox ALDS roster originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

After being left off the Boston Red Sox‘ initial American League Division Series roster, Matt Barnes is back with the team ahead of Game 2.

The Red Sox reliever will replace right-hander Garrett Richards, who is dealing with a left hamstring strain. The team announced the move prior to Friday night’s matchup vs. the Tampa Bay Rays.

Richards exited Game 1 after facing only one batter. He was replaced by Nick Pivetta, who went on to pitch the next 4 2/3 innings in the 5-0 loss.

Barnes’ 2021 season went downhill after being named an All-Star for the first time in his MLB career. The 2018 World Series champion posted a 13.50 ERA (10 ER in 6 2/3 innings) in September.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:02 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field.
