What you need to know about the Mavericks

The Mavericks were able to grind out a solid win over the Toronto Raptors this past Saturday, winning 103-95. Small forward Tim Hardaway Jr. and point guard Luka Doncic were among the main playmakers for Dallas as the former shot 7-for-11 from beyond the arc and finished with 25 points and the latter almost posted a triple-double on 27 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds.

Dallas has played just two games so far but Doncic is already one of the early candidates for the MVP award. He is one assist shy of averaging a triple-double as he’s putting up 22.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 9.5 assists per game. But Doncic and the rest of the Mavs will be hoping to get more of a contribution from their prized free-agent signing in Reggie Bullock as the sharpshooter is shooting just 14.3 percent on the season.

What you need to know about the Rockets

Meanwhile, Houston came up short against the Boston Celtics on Sunday, falling 107-97. Shooting guard Kevin Porter wasn’t much of a difference maker for Houston, picking six fouls and turning the ball over eight times en route to a 15-point finish. But No. 2 overall pick Jalen Green showed his star potential as he scored 30 points on 61.1 percent shooting.

Big man Christian Wood leads Houston in points (22.3), rebounds (10.7) and blocks (1.3) per game. He is one of five Rockets averaging double-figures, and that includes sixth man Eric Gordon who is putting up 13 points per game. Houston also has to be pleased with the defensive play of rookie Alperen Sengun as he’s averaging 2.3 steals and 1.0 blocks per contest.

How to make Rockets vs. Mavericks picks

The model is leaning over on the total, and it’s also generated a point-spread pick that is hitting in over 50 percent of simulations. You can only see the pick at SportsLine.
