Max Scherzer blue Mets jersey swap treated 2021

At his point in his illustrious career, Max Scherzer’s spot in Cooperstown is all but set. The right-hander has three Cy Young Awards to his name to go along with eight All-Star appearances and a World Series ring in 2019.

So, what still motivates the Mets starter to go out and be better than ever? He answered that question on the latest edition of Mets Hot Stove.

“To continue to win, to try to go out and win another World Series,” Scherzer told Garry Apple in Port St. Lucie. “That’s what we play the game for, is to win the World Series. For me, I have another great opportunity here to go out and win a World Series. And so that’s the goal and that’s the only goal I need.”

That goal doesn’t just belong solely to Scherzer either. As he explained, his earliest conversations with Mets owner Steve Cohen made it clear that Cohen is focused on winning now.

“Obviously, having conversations with Steve and his commitment to winning. Great organizations I played for, when the ownership is in win mode now you definitely feel that as a player,” Scherzer said. “So, in the offseason when I was talking to Steve about that, I got a sense right off the bat that he’s looking to win, he’s looking to win right now. So, that made me feel a lot comfortable coming here to the roster.”

And as the Mets looking to win their first World Series title since 1986, their effort will likely be led by the two aces atop their rotation – and perhaps the two best pitchers in baseball – in Scherzer and Jacob deGrom.

Scherzer said Tuesday that being in the same rotation as deGrom will see both pitchers challenged to be at their best night in and night out.

“You always want to pitch with great pitchers. You don’t want to just be the only guy there,” Scherzer said. “You want to be around other great pitchers in the league and obviously what he can do, I’ve seen over the years now, he can really throw the heck of a baseball.

“You get challenged every single day when you’re around great pitchers and you always want to elevate your game to continue to get better. So yeah, it’s going to be fun to be able to pitch with him.”
