Mets Injury Tracker: Tomas Nido to be activated Tuesday, Noah Syndergaard to face live batters this week
Here is the latest news and possible return dates for Mets players on the IL…
Tomas Nido (thumb)
Luis Rojas said on Sept. 13 that Nido would get another day of rest and then be activated on the 14th.
“Today is a scheduled day off for him after catching back to back (at his rehab assignment),” Rojas said. “But he feels really good. … Swinging, hitting the ball, the thumb feels ok and catching he feels good.”
Nido was placed back on the 10-day IL on Aug. 31 with the same thumb injury that landed him on the IL earlier in August.
Potential return date: Sept. 13-14
Noah Syndergaard (TJS recovery)
Rojas said on Sept. 13 that Syndergaard is scheduled to throw a “touch and feel,” light bullpen session later that day and would face live batters again sometime later this week.
Syndergaard said on Sept. 10 that he’s taking things “day by day” and has thrown a bullpen session already, as he looks to get back on his rehab program after pausing the process due to testing positive for COVID-19.
“I’m pretty optimistic with that,” he said.
Potential Return Date: TBD
Jacob deGrom (elbow inflammation)
Luis Rojas said on Sept. 12 that deGrom is scheduled to get on the mound and throw again “maybe this week,” though he doesn’t have an exact date.
DeGrom briefly met with reporters in Miami on Sept. 9, saying that his right UCL is “perfectly fine.”
“I know what we said, but my ligament is perfectly fine,” he said. “I’ve been throwing. I wouldn’t be throwing if I had a compromised ligament. So that’s the plan to continue to throw and build up.”
DeGrom recently advanced to 120 feet in his catch progression, per Rojas.
DeGrom is eligible to return from the IL on Sept. 13. He has not pitched since July 7.
Potential return date: Late-September
Brandon Nimmo (hamstring strain)
Rojas said on Sept. 12 that the training staff was beginning to discuss when Nimmo would start a rehab assignment, and that the outfielder was continuing to progress better than expected for a hamstring injury.
Nimmo had injured his hamstring on Sept. 4 against the Washington Nationals.
Potential return date: Mid-to-late September
Jordan Yamamoto (shoulder)
Like Nido, Yamamoto also had his rehab transferred to Syracuse on Sept. 11. As Syracuse’s starting pitcher, Yamamoto went three innings and yielded one hit while striking out six on 45 pitches (32 strikes).
Yamamoto has been on the 60-day IL since late May with a sore shoulder. He resumed mound work in mid-July.
Sept. 2 with Low-A Port St. Lucie, Yamamoto logged four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five and walking zero.
Potential Return Date: Mid-September
Robert Gsellman (lat)
Gsellman recently pitched for Low-A St. Lucie as he started a rehab assignment, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.
He allowed three earned runs and three hits while striking out one over 0.2 innings.
The right-hander has been on the 60-day IL since June 23 with a lat issue, but could be back in the bullpen later this year to finish the regular season.
Gsellman last pitched on June 19 against the Washington Nationals, when he allowed one run on three hits in 2.0 innings while serving as the opener.
Drew Smith (right shoulder inflammation)
The Mets announced on Aug. 14 that Smith was on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
The 27-year-old Smith, who last pitched on Aug. 13, has appeared in 31 games for the Mets this season, pitching to a 2.40 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 41.1 innings.
Potential return date: TBD
Jose Peraza (fractured middle finger)
Peraza took grounders at Citi Field on July 23 while still wearing a splint on his finger, which he is not close to being rid of.
Peraza was placed on the 10-day IL on July 20 with a fractured right middle finger. Over 52 games, he’s batting .205 with six home runs and 19 RBI.
Potential return date: TBD
Joey Lucchesi (Tommy John surgery) and Dellin Betances (shoulder surgery) are out for the season. David Peterson (oblique/foot) is likely out for the season
