Báez, Mets send booing fans message with thumbs down gesture originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Mets fans are booing the team amid the team’s recent struggles, and Javy Báez and other players are responding with a new gesture to the New York faithful.

Báez, the former Cubs shortstop, Francisco Lindor and Kevin Pillar were among Mets players to give fans a thumbs down following big moments during New York’s 9-4 win over the Nationals on Sunday.

Báez, who broke out the gesture after a two-run home run, explained it after the win.

“We’re not machines,” Báez said. “We’re going to struggle. We’re going to struggle seven times out of 10. It just feels bad.

“When I strike out and I get booed, it doesn’t really get to me. But I want to let them know when we have success, we’re going to do the same thing to let them know how it feels.

“If we win together, then we’ve got to lose together. The fans are a really big part of it. They’ve got to be better.”

The Mets ended July with a four-game lead in the NL East. They’re 8-19 in August, dropping to third place and 7 1/2 games out of first.

Báez was a fan favorite in Chicago before the Cubs traded him to the Mets last month. He’s hitting .210/.258/.452 in 17 games since the trade, missing time due to a back injury.
