Kevin Pillar rounds bases after home run at Citi Field June 2021

Mets OF Kevin Pillar is a free agent after the mutual option on his contract for the 2022 season was declined, per multiple reports.

With the $2.9 million player option declined and the Mets declining the $6.4 million team option, it became a $1.4 million buyout.

Pillar signed with the Mets prior to the 2021 season and was initially expected to be a bench player.

However, a crazy rash of injuries early in the season thrust Pillar into a regular role, and he helped the Mets stay afloat.

Pillar became a folk hero of sorts after he was hit in the face by a pitch on May 18, suffering nasal fractures, only to return to the clubhouse the next day and return to the lineup less than two weeks later.

Overall in 2021, Pillar hit .231/.277/.415 with 15 homers in 124 games while getting time at all three outfield positions.
