Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio close up while with Brooklyn Cyclones, shadow on face

Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio is turning heads while playing for Licey in the Dominican Winter League.

Mauricio is hitting .394/.394/.636 with two homers, two doubles, and one stolen base in 33 plate appearances over 10 games.

The 20-year-old Mauricio is coming off a strong minor league season, where he slashed .248/.296/.449 with 20 homers, 15 doubles, five triples, and 11 stolen bases in 108 games with High-A Brooklyn and Double-A Binghamton.

Mauricio was one of the youngest players in Double-A this season after his promotion, roughly four years younger than the average player in the league.

Here’s what SNY contributor Joe DeMayo recently wrote about Mauricio, whose upside is tantalizing.

The Mets have been impressed with his exit velocities and barrel rate. His long-term defensive home is still a question, and as he progresses through the system he will need to improve his plate discipline. He still has All-Star potential, but he just needs to put the whole package together on the field.

A natural shortstop who is blocked there in the majors by Francisco Lindor, Mauricio could be an option at third base if and when he makes his Mets debut, which could potentially come at some point in 2022.
