Taijuan Walker still has his sights set on being ready to pitch his first time through the rotation come the regular season, and Saturday was another step in the right direction as the right-hander made his spring debut, pitching two scoreless innings against the Washington Nationals.

Walker, who had knee surgery in mid-January to remove a piece of cartilage that had fallen off his kneecap, threw 20 pitches (11 strikes) over his two scoreless frames, allowing just a two-out Lane Thomas single in the second.

“It was good to be back out there. I was excited,” Walker said after his day was finished. “There was a little rush today, but it felt good to be back out there, and got my work done.”

“I’m still behind some of the other guys. I like where I was at,” he later added. “I thought my offspeed stuff was pretty good. Again, first start, got two innings, finished in the bullpen, threw another 20 in the bullpen, so I like where I’m at right now.”

Even better than the zeroes he put up in the box score, Walker came out of the game feeling completely healthy, saying that he hasn’t been worried about his knee at all during camp.

“The knee’s been great, haven’t been thinking about that at all – bullpens, been doing PFPs with the team now. Knee’s been completely great,” he said.

After Walker’s two innings of work, the Mets followed him up with David Peterson. As Walker continues to recover, that very well could be the team’s plan come his first start of the regular season – piggybacking Peterson behind him as he continues to stretch out his arm.

Walker said on Saturday that he believes he’ll be in a good place physically for his first start, even if he’s not quite 100 percent built up.

“I think right now I’m on track to (make my first start),” Walker said. “I don’t think I’ll be at 100 pitches, but I think I’ll be on track for at least five innings.”
