The Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves 5-0 on Sunday, finishing the regular season with a 77-85 record.

Here are some key takeaways …

Noah Syndergaard didn’t get off to an ideal start, letting up a leadoff homer to Jorge Soler as the Braves went up 1-0. Ozzie Albies then doubled down the left field line, and scored on Austin Riley‘s hit to left field making it a 2-0 game. Dom Smith‘s throw home was off target, but Riley was thrown out at second base. Syndergaard got a pop out to third base to escape the inning after 16 pitches.

Trevor Williams came in for Syndergaard to pitch the second inning, recording back-to-back strikeouts and then getting Dansby Swanson to ground out and end the inning.

– In the bottom of the third, Soler walked and advanced to third on Freeman’s single to right field. Albies drove in the run on a groundout to Pete Alonso at first, giving Atlanta a 3-0 lead. Riley made it 4-0 on an RBI double, and then scored to go up 5-0 on Adam Duvall‘s single.

Jonathan Villar recorded just the Mets’ second hit of the day in the fifth inning with a leadoff single. However, Jose Peraza then grounded into the 1-4-3 double play as the Mets struggled to get anything going at the plate. Patrick Mazeika struck out to end the top half of the inning.

Michael Conforto led off the seventh with a single to left field, but Alonso grounded into the 4-6-3 double play. Smith grounded out to end the side, and then Heath Hembree pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.

Will Smith came in to close things out for Atlanta, and struck out Luis Guillorme on three pitches for the first out. Brandon Nimmo grounded out to second base, and Francisco Lindor grounded out to third to end the season.

What’s next?

The Mets will open their 2022 Spring Training Grapefruit League schedule on Saturday, Feb. 26 against the Miami Marlins in Jupiter, FL.

The team will open the 2022 regular season on Thursday, March 31 against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.
