Stroman home whites blue glove vs Marlins

Stroman home whites blue glove vs Marlins

The Mets took game one of their doubleheader against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, 5-2.

Here are the takeaways…

1. Marcus Stroman, in his ninth start in a doubleheader this year, faced trouble in the third, as he had runners on the corners with one out. But the threat ended with a strike-him-out, throw-him-out double play. In the fourth, he allowed a two-run home run to Lewin Diaz to keep the Marlins within one. But that was all the damage he’d allow in his five innings of work – he finished allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four on 78 pitches. He also stole the first base of his career. He is now one of three pitchers in baseball this year with at least 26 starts of five-plus innings without allowing more than three earned runs.

2. On a 2-0 pitch in the first inning, Brandon Nimmo tripled and was singled in by Francisco Lindor to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead. With runners on first and second and two outs in the third, Jonathan Villar lined a single to right field – Magneuris Sierra laid out and caught it, but the ball fell out of his glove when he landed, thus scoring Michael Conforto to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. Kevin Pillar then reached on an error that also scored Javier Baez to make it a three-run lead.

3. The Mets went to the bullpen in the sixth inning to get six outs. Seth Lugo was the first guy out of the pen, and retired all three batters he faced.

4. In the fifth, the Mets loaded the bases with two outs and Tomas Nido at the plate, but he struck out swinging to keep it a one-run game. But Lindor drove a two-run home run to left field in the sixth to give the Mets a comfortable 5-2 lead.

5. Edwin Diaz came in for the final three outs, and did the job in just 10 pitches, striking out two of his three batters.
