Justin Verlander pitches in white Astros uniform

Justin Verlander pitches in white Astros uniform

Justin Verlander, the 38-year-old free agent, conducted a workout for teams interested in his services next year and many showed up to see what he looked like post-Tommy John surgery.

The Mets had two scouts present, while the Yankees had one as well, per The New York Post’s Joel Sherman. And the results from the workout were reportedly good.

Verlander threw all his pitches and 15-20 teams were there to witness it.

Both teams are in the market for starting pitching next season. The Mets extended the qualifying offer to Noah Syndergaard, but Marcus Stromanis a free agent as well. With no certainty on how Jacob deGrom will enter the season after suffering a sprained UCL, whoever runs the team’s baseball operations will certainly be scouring the market for the right rotation in 2022.

For the Yankees, they lost Corey Kluber and require a No. 2 behind Gerrit Cole. Someone like Verlander, who has been teammates with the Yanks’ ace with the Houston Astros, could be a good fit on a short-term deal.

The workout took place at trainer Eric Cressey‘s facility in Florida, and Cressey just joined the Yanks as an employee last season when his client in Kluber joined the squad.

Prior to needing surgery, Verlander seemed to just be getting better with age. He won the Cy Young Award in 2019, the second of his career, after tossing 223 innings to the tune of a 2.58 ERA and 300 strikeouts. But, during the shortened 2020 campaign, he only pitched six innings before suffering his injury that’s had him out since.

He would be entering his 17th year in MLB, where he owns a career 3.33 ERA. With a solid workout, teams could be buzzing his phone all winter to lock him up in their rotation. And New York, no matter which team, could be the destination.
