Report: Michael Wacha drawing interest from AL Central club originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Michael Wacha surprisingly remains on the free-agent market despite a strong 2022 season with the Boston Red Sox. It may not be long before he finds a new home for 2023.

The Minnesota Twins have expressed interest in signing Wacha, according to Dan Hayes and Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. It’s unclear how serious the reported interest is and whether the two sides have discussed a contract.

Wacha, 31, was arguably Boston’s best starting pitcher during its tumultuous 2022 campaign. The veteran right-hander posted an 11-2 record with a 3.32 ERA and 1.115 WHIP in 23 starts (127.1 innings pitched). His production was worth every penny of the one-year $7 million deal he signed with the Red Sox last offseason.

The Red Sox already have lost two starters in free agency with Rich Hill and Nathan Eovaldi signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers, respectively. They responded to Eovaldi’s departure by signing two-time Cy Young award winner Corey Kluber to a one-year contract.

As of Tuesday, Boston’s projected rotation consists of Chris Sale, Kluber, Garrett Whitlock, Nick Pivetta, Brayan Bello, and James Paxton.
