There may be a few ghosts from 1978 lurking in Fenway Park on Tuesday night as the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees in this year’s American League wild card playoff game.

Although the two teams have met other times in the postseason — most recently in the 2018 AL division series, and more famously in the 2003 and 2004 AL championship series – the tension and drama of a winner-take-all affair will be most like the one-game playoff for the AL East title 43 years ago.

In that contest, Yankees shortstop Bucky Dent hit a go-ahead three-run homer into the screen above Fenway’s Green Monster in Game 163 to propel New York to a 5-4 win. The Yanks went on to win the World Series.

First pitch is set for 8:08 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Fenway Park in Boston. The Red Sox are at home due to their 10-9 advantage over the Yankees during the regular season.
