Gausman’s Cy Young finish is highest by Giant in five years originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Kevin Gausman’s case for a massive contract this offseason got a small boost on Wednesday.

Gausman finished sixth in National League Cy Young Award voting, the highest by a Giants pitcher since Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto were fourth and sixth, respectively, in 2016. Gausman is the first Giants pitcher to be listed on a Cy Young ballot — voters make five selections — since that 2016 season.

The award went to Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes, who edged Zack Wheeler of the Philadelphia Phillies. Los Angeles Dodgers right-handers Max Scherzer and Walker Buehler finished in the next two spots, followed by Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff.

In his second season with the Giants, Gausman went 14-6 with a 2.81 ERA and 227 strikeouts. He ranked fifth in the NL in innings, sixth in ERA and opponents average, and seventh in WHIP. Gausman was an All-Star for the first time after posting a 1.73 ERA in the first half.

Gausman threw the final pitches by a Giant in 2021, coming out of the bullpen in the ninth inning of Game 5 of the NLDS. That game was started by Logan Webb, and the Giants are hopeful they can reunite the two in next year’s rotation. Gausman is a free agent but has expressed an interest in returning. It will be expensive, though.

Gausman and Robbie Ray — who won the AL Cy Young — are thought to be the two competing for the largest overall contract for a pitcher this offseason, and both could get over $100 million on a long-term deal. The pitching market has been particularly strong thus far, with Justin Verlander agreeing to a deal with the Houston Astros that could guarantee him $50 million over two seasons a few minutes before the Cy Young Awards were announced.
