Noah Syndergaard 2021 debut blue uniform

Noah Syndergaard 2021 debut blue uniform

Before Noah Syndergaard agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels worth $21 million, he did not give the Mets the opportunity to match or exceed it.

The above was first mentioned Tuesday on the Carton & Roberts show on WFAN, and reported by Joel Sherman of The New York Post on Wednesday.

Per Sherman, after the Mets extended the one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer to Syndergaard, there was “radio silence” from the team as Syndergaard was courted by the Angels and other teams.

During the season, Syndergaard repeatedly expressed his desire to return to the Mets, and said late in the season that he would be grateful if the Mets made him the qualifying offer — hinting that he would accept it.

That Syndergaard left for the Angels was a shock, but it is not clear what the Mets should’ve been expected to do after offering him $18.4 million for one season.

Had the Mets been in touch with Syndergaard between extending the QO and being made aware of the Angels’ offer, they would’ve been bidding against themselves.

And even if the Mets were given a chance to match or exceed the Angels’ offer, they might have chosen not to, since one year at $18.4 million was already quite high for a pitcher who has barely pitched since 2019.

With Syndergaard now in Los Angeles, though, the Mets have one more hole to fill in a rotation that was already quite thin.
