Noah Syndergaard fires a pitch during a bullpen session at 2021 spring training

Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard will start a rehab assignment on Thursday for High-A Brooklyn, Luis Rojas said on Wednesday.

Syndergaard is scheduled to pitch one inning during the outing.

Speaking Tuesday, Mets acting GM Zack Scott discussed the possibility that Syndergaard could return in a bullpen role.

“Yeah that’ll be part of the conversation,” Scott said. “You kind of have to take it as it goes to some degree. See how he does. If he starts lengthening out, does that change the way he feels, does that change the power in his stuff — we learn a lot as we go.”

It would likely take three or four rehab starts to stretch Syndergaard out to start, which could be the reason he returns in relief.

“I think just with where the calendar is, I think if you decide to try to bring a guy back with more length, it’s just going to lengthen out how long it takes to get them back into a game,” Scott said. “We can always change course. It doesn’t affect the progression. It’s basically when you stop the progression it affects it.

“We always learn new things about who’s healthy on the major league roster and where we’re at. We’ll figure out where the best fit is when we get a good look at how he’s progressing.”

Syndergaard missed the entire 2020 season following Tommy John surgery, and a setback earlier this season delayed his return from June to what is now looking like early September.
