Bizarre sixth-inning gaffe highlights Giants’ win vs. A’s originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
MLB’s Opening Day is less than a week away and it appears even the umpires need a little bit more practice before March 30.
In the top of the sixth inning in the Giants’ 9-5 exhibition win over the Athletics on Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum, Luis Matos smoked a ball to third to Aledmys Diaz, who calmly threw the ball to Tony Kemp to get a sliding Joc Pederson out at second.
Kemp and the rest of the A’s then proceeded to jog off the field as if to signal the end of the inning.
The problem? Pederson only was the second out.
The Giants’ Alex Wood already warmed up and San Francisco’s defense had gotten ready before the umpires realized their mistake. Once play resumed with Oakland’s defense set, Matos took first base as part of the fielder’s choice and promptly stole second base.
J.D. Davis eventually flied out to A’s center fielder Esteury Ruiz to end one of the more interesting spring training innings in recent memory.

With Opening Day just four days away, the Giants will have their work cut out for them if they want to replicate their success from the 2021 season with a revamped roster, while the A’s will look to exceed expectations with a rebuilding roster.
But before all of that, tune-ups from everyone on the field — including the umpires — are warranted.
