Ozzie Guillen takes shot at Cubs’ treatment of Sammy Sosa originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Ozzie Guillén pulled no punches when discussing the long-term estrangement between Sammy Sosa and the Cubs franchise.

“It’s not my business. I’m not part of the team,” Guillen said on NBC Sports Chicago’s “White Sox Postgame Live” Sunday. “They treat Sammy Sosa like he was convicted of something.

“The reason the Cubs were back on the map was because Sammy Sosa,” added Guillen, Sosa’s teammate with the White Sox from 1989-91.

“The reason people knew the Cubs during that time was Sammy Sosa.”

Sosa and the Cubs have been at odds since he left Wrigley Field early during the final game of the 2004 season. The Cubs traded him to the Orioles in the ensuing offseason.

The slugger’s legacy is tied to performance-enhancing drugs, although he has never admitted to using.

Sosa has expressed a desire to return to Wrigley Field through the years and openly wondered last summer why he doesn’t have a good relationship with the Ricketts family, who purchased the Cubs five years after his time with the team ended.

Team chairman Tom Ricketts has been asked about Sosa through the years at Cubs Convention, including 2018.

“I think we all need to be sensitive and understand their situation,” said Ricketts of players from the steroid era. “But I also believe that players from that era owe us a little bit of honesty, and I kind of feel like the only way to turn this page is to put everything on the table.”

Sosa was recently left out of the Cubs’ inaugural team Hall of Fame class. His 545 home runs are most in Cubs history, and he’s second on the franchise’s all-time leaderboards in on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
