Pedro Martinez has high praise for Tanner Houck after Game 2 originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Tanner Houck‘s outstanding Game 2 performance vs. the Tampa Bay Rays took Pedro Martinez on a trip down memory lane.

The Boston Red Sox legend watched as Houck allowed only two hits and one run in five innings of relief during the American League Division Series showdown. The young right-hander’s performance bailed out Sox ace Chris Sale, who allowed five runs in a miserable first inning, and propelled Boston to a 14-6 victory.

Houck’s outing reminded Martinez of his own playoff outing almost 12 years ago to the date. The Hall of Famer tweeted high praise for Houck and made us all feel old in the process.

“Kuddos to Tanner Houck for picking up the @RedSox tonight…you were 3 years old when I did the same in 1999!! Awesome work on the mound kid!” he wrote.

Martinez’s memorable performance came on Oct. 11, 1999 in Game 5 of the ALDS vs. the Cleveland Indians. With the Red Sox down 5-2, Martinez battled through a strained back muscle to pitch six no-hit relief innings as Boston earned a 12-8 comeback win.

Houck could be called upon to start Game 5 of the series if necessary. For now though, the Red Sox are focused on taking the series lead with Nathan Eovaldi on the mound for Sunday’s Game 3 at Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:07 p.m. ET.
