Report: Max Scherzer out for Dodgers in Game 6 originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

When the Los Angeles Dodgers traded for Max Scherzer in a deal that also involved Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals, it was for the veteran right-hander to pitch in big postseason games.

The Dodgers fought off elimination in Game 5 of the NLCS, beating the Atlanta Braves 11-2, with manager Dave Roberts ready to hand the ball over in a win or go home Game 6.

However, the Los Angeles Times reports that Scherzer won’t start the game in a last-minute scratch. The Dodgers have decided to forgo having the 37-year-old on the mound against the Braves due to fatigue concerns.

Scherzer hasn’t pitched for the Dodgers since Game 2 in Atlanta, and before that, he made an appearance as a closer in an NLDS-clinching win over the San Francisco Giants. Following Game 2, the former Nationals pitcher admitted his “arm was dead.”

The Times speculates that the Dodgers could go with Walker Buehler starting on short rest for the second time in the postseason, but no official announcement has been made yet.
