CARLSBAD, Calif. — The Mets continue to see former Washington Nationals assistant general manager Adam Cromie as a strong candidate for their GM opening, but are also vetting and considering several other candidates, according to league sources.

Former Yankees executive and Angels general manager Billy Eppler remains on the team’s radar, but he isn’t the only one. The Mets were doing background work on a minimum of one additional candidate as recently as Wednesday, according to sources.

As of Thursday midday, a final decision was not close.

As SNY has reported, the Mets have at times considered the idea of waiting for Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns to become available.

At the same time, the team wants to hire a strong leader of baseball operations now. Stearns and the Mets have never spoken, so the idea remains an abstraction that could potentially be revisited in the future, depending on the state of their organization.

The Mets are under the impression that a vesting option in Stearns’ contact could keep him off the market for as many as two more seasons.

Stearns did not respond to messages.
