Jean Afterman during 2017 press conference

Jean Afterman during 2017 press conference

About a week ago, the Mets had the smart idea to ask permission to interview Yankees assistant general manager Jean Afterman, a highly respected figure in the industry.

The team had the impression that Afterman was not interested in leaving the Yankees, and according to league sources, she politely declined their request. It was unsurprising, but worth the call.

The revelation of interest in Afterman marks the second time on Wednesday that we have learned about a potential Mets candidate with Yankees ties. As reported earlier, the team has interest in former Yanks assistant GM and Angels GM Billy Eppler, though the extent of that interest is not yet clear.

The other known possibilities are Red Sox exec Raquel Ferreira and Orioles exec Sig Mejdal, though the latter is considered a long shot.

The Mets are not close to making a hire, and do not mind taking their time until they find a fit.
