What Giants’ ‘big miss’ prospect Harrison wants to work on originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Kyle Harrison is a name Giants fans should remember

In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Carlos Ramírez, Harrison explained what he is working on improving the most as he pushes through the minor leagues.

“For me, that old changeup grip wasn’t working necessarily,” Harrison said when asked about his changeup. “I was having a lot of big misses with it.”

Moreover, the 21-year-old Harrison added that he wanted to establish his changeup early in games and is always learning to try and improve his approach.

“There’s always something new that you could tweak with your grip or the way you spin it or this and that. That’s the beauty of baseball,” Harrison concluded.

The San Jose native is San Francisco’s top pitching prospect and for good reason: in Double-A, Harrison has a 2.56 ERA and has held opponents to a .183 average.

Including his time in High-A, Harrison has a 2.24 ERA in 92 1/3 innings pitched, and he is 4-3 in 20 games, all starts, with opponents hitting .182.

Additionally, Harrison’s swing-and-miss stuff was on display last month. Harrison struck out nine Bowie Baysox hitters in three innings in late July, further cementing his propensity to get swinging strikes.

Harrison has been so impressive, in fact, that former Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong said that the young lefty reminds him of Giants legend Madison Bumgarner and not just because of their similar deliveries.

If Harrison continues to develop and grow steadily, expect him to be in The Show sooner rather than later.
