Luis Rojas close up grey uni

Luis Rojas is officially remaining in New York, as the Yankees announced he will be joining Aaron Boone‘s new coaching staff as third base coach.

Earlier reports on this situation indicated a “strong likelihood” that Rojas would take the job with the Yanks, which came out after it was known he interviewed with the team.

Rojas brings 16 years of experience with the Mets, serving in multiple roles before being named their manager back in 2020. After two seasons, however, the Mets wanted to move on.

But the Yankees quickly pick him up after their own coaching shifts, with Phil Nevin, Reggie Willits, Marcus Thames and P.J. Pilittere relieved of their duties with the team.

Rojas also interviewed for the San Diego Padres‘ coaching vacancy before Bob Melvin was hired.

Boone not only has Rojas in his corner on the field but also in the clubhouse where he has been known to be a solid presence. He’s bilingual and connects well with his players, a main component behind why the Mets made him manager once they parted ways with Carlos Beltran.

Rojas is just the first hire Boone and the Yanks have made. They also spoke with Eric Chavez regarding his interest in coaching again. New York still needs a first base coach, hitting coach and assistant hitting coach.
