The Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon as they continued their spring training schedule.

Here are some key takeaways…

– Coming off a rough outing against the Philadelphia Phillies his last time out, Luis Severino once again got off to a shaky start. After allowing a leadoff homer to Kerry Carpenter, Severino allowed a single, a stolen base, and then a hard-hit RBI double from Austin Meadows.

– To his credit, though, Severino settled in, posting scoreless frames in the second and third while pushing his strikeout total to seven. In all, Severino went 4.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. He threw 74 pitches, almost exactly the target of 75 he had coming into the game.

Anthony Volpe made the start at shortstop, hitting fifth in the order. He walked in his first at-bat and stole second base, and then made hard contact on a double pulled to the left field fence in the fifth. Volpe went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, a stole base, a run scored, and an RBI. It’s getting more and more difficult for the Yankees to leave him off the Opening Day roster.

Josh Donaldson got the Yankees on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, launching a no-doubt solo homer for his second home run of the spring. And he wasn’t done yet, belting a three-run shot to give the Yankees the lead in the top of the fifth.

Clay Holmes pitched a perfect fifth inning for the Yankees, striking out two Tigers. His spring ERA is 1.80. Jonathan Loaisiga followed that up with a perfect sixth inning, striking out the side.
