Martinez suffered an ankle injury while running out to right field during Sunday’s regular season finale. It’s an unfortunate injury for Boston, as the veteran slugger is a crucial piece in the middle of the lineup.
He hasn’t been too much of a nuisance to the Yanks this season, owning a .186/.258/.356 slash line with two homers and three RBI.
On the Yankees’ injury front, Gio Urshela is on the roster after a very scary catch that forced him into the Tampa Bay Rays’ dugout on Sunday. He was limping for the rest of the game, though stayed in after.
It’s not yet clear if Urshela will be starting at shortstop — where he has been since Gleyber Torres shifted back to second base.
Finally, the Yankees added some more speed to their Wild Card roster, adding OF Greg Allen to the mix and designating LHP Andrew Heaney for assignment. Allen could find himself in a pinch-running scenario late in the game.
The Wild Card game kicks off at 8:08 p.m. at Fenway Park.
