Boston Celtics star forward Jaylen Brown has been working his way back from a hamstring injury that has caused him to miss considerable time already, only to be downgraded to out ahead of the Celtics road tilt with the Utah Jazz on Friday evening.

Head coach Ime Udoka fielded questions ahead of that contest — Boston’s first game in their annual West Coast road trip — with the press after the team practiced Friday morning, and the status of Brown’s hamstring injury was the very first thing on the media’s agenda to ask Udoka about as the team will be facing some especially tough opponents over the next week or so.

“He had a little tightness (when) he played the game the other night,” shared the Celtics coach, referring to a clearly bothered Brown during Boston’s 88 – 87 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.

“We’ve listed him questionable, day-to-day,” added Udoka. “That’s how it’s going to be going forward coming off of this injury.”

“We’ve increased his minutes and he’s felt good at times, better — and then he had this setback, so we’re being cautious there. It’s a few days of rest, then we’ll re-evaluate it.”

Asked if the Georgia native had specifically said anything about the injury, the Celtics coach said, “No, he just got tight at the end again.”

“I think he may have tweaked an ankle, an Achilles (tendon) or something late in the game on the final play. That may have shown him hobbling more because of that. But like I said, it’s the thing that we are going to have to monitor coming back, he missed quite a few games (due to) the severity of it.”

“We’ll just read his body, how he feels — especially after we increase his minutes,” finished Udoka.

No word yet on whether it is a one-game rest or something that could drag on for some time, but a cautious approach is always the wisest when dealing with such soft tissue injuries.

Particularly considering that the team needs Brown healthy come the postseason if it hopes to make a run longer than a handful of games.
