There has been no captain of the Boston Celtics since before the tenure of former head coach and current President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens, with the current Celtics team president having had a philosophy on coaching that did not mesh with the concept.

But now the team has a new head coach in former Brooklyn Nets assistant coach Ime Udoka, who revealed after the team’s training camp practice on Saturday that he might end up naming more than one captain, never mind bringing back the practice. Speaking with the press during the team’s usual media availability session, Udoka acknowledged it was a topic of discussion internally, and that naming more than one captain was on the table.

“We’ve talked about it,” he explained. “I’ve talked about it with the staff.”

“You’ve got guys who have been here, the core guys, with Marcus (Smart), Jaylen (Brown), Jayson (Tatum), they’ve been here forever,” added the new Celtics coach.

“But,” he continued, “you’ve got a guy like Al (Horford) who is coming back and is a veteran presence, a veteran voice that they all respect and listen to.”

Asked about the same issue later on in the media availability session, All-Star forward Jaylen Brown shared his belief that the team was not lacking in leadership, and how that shaped his opinion on who might be named captain.

“We’ve got a lot of great leaders on our team,” Brown told reporters. “Even if I weren’t selected I wouldn’t look at it as a bad thing.”

“I think identifying voices to listen to throughout the process is going to be fantastic. We’re definitely going to need, in moments of adversity, a strong voice to carry us through the waves. Al (Horford)’s got my vote right now.”

Teammate Marcus Smart shared a similar sentiment.

“Anybody can be a captain,” the Flower Mound native related. “We’re all captains out there.”

“We lead and we show our ‘captainism’ in different ways,” he added. “We’re all grown here. We’ve got to go ahead and do our job, plain and simple.”
