The Boston Celtics finished the 2022-23 regular season with the second-best defense in the NBA with the league’s 2022 Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) playing point guard and one of the Association’s best guards at blocking shots and taking charges in Derrick White. Yet, they somehow managed to go without a single player on their roster getting even one vote for this season’s DPOY award.

Mind you, we are not suggesting that this season’s winner, Jaren Jackson Jr. of the Memphis Grizzlies, is underserving, or anything even vaguely close to that. But one would think it hard to be the Celtics with all the above-mentioned going on without someone casting a vote for a Boston player.

To try and get to the bottom of why this might have come to pass, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast recently debated the issue on an episode of the pod.
